A few months into my tour the Australian director of WUS in Australia and my tour manager closed their office in Melbourne decamped to Canberra and refused to communicate with me or any other of the active WUS groups. After two years I finally managed to track the Director down. He was holding a largely unpublicised AGM of WUS at a communist youth camp outside Sydney! I realised that WUS in Australia, which had been a voluntary aid association between universities based on trust and good will, was now dead. Soon afterwards the new regime gave up their flirtation with the Maoists who were in decline by this time, since they were graduating and getting influential jobs in the Labor Party, the Education Department, the universities and the mass media. WUS was then absorbed by aid organisations whose aim was to force economic development on cultures who were relating more sustainably than we were to their biological, psychological, social, and cultural environments!
